The Spanish Hogfish is a common and conspicuous species on coral reefs. The blue and yellow young strongly resemble the Royal Gramma (family Grammatidae) and often serve as cleaners of larger fish. This species feeds on crabs, brittle stars, sea urchins, and snails.This fish was caught in the Florida Keys.

Head, upper front part of body, and front of dorsal fin blue if from shallow water, red if from deep; rest of body and tail yellow. Dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins mostly blue or red-yellow at rear. Black spot on front of dorsal fin. Pectoral fin unmarked, transparent.
